Mental Health Awareness Week 13-19 May 2024

Posted on May 13th, 2024

Movement is important to support mental health, but so many people struggle to get the exercise they need to boost their wellbeing.

This year’s Mental Health Awareness Week, organised by the Mental Health Foundation, aims to raise awareness of the link between physical activity and good mental health.

One of the most important things people can do to help protect their mental health is regular movement. Moving more can increase your energy levels, reduce stress and anxiety, and boost self-esteem.

According to the mental health charity MIND, every year, 1 in 4 people will experience a mental health problem. Two million people are currently waiting for NHS mental health services, while the number of young people struggling with their mental health has nearly doubled since 2017.

To tie in with the theme of this year’s Mental Health Awareness Week, the Mental Health Foundation offers the following tips to be more active:

  • Find moments for movement every day: Find ways to be active during ‘waiting’ periods of the day, such as boiling the kettle, waiting for a bus or waiting for a delivery.
  • Set small, achievable goals: Rather than trying to do too much too soon, set easy to reach goals such as walking to the end of the street and back, then push that a bit further every day.
  • Take a break from sitting: Many of us sit for long periods of the day while working, watching TV or scrolling on phones. Set a time to take regular breaks to stand up, walk around and stretch your body.
  • Find fun in movement: Discover enjoyable ways to move around, such as picking up a sport or visiting the gym.
  • Connect with others: Think about ways to make catch-ups with friends more active; such as going for a walk instead of sitting in a coffee shop or visit your local pool and have a chat while going for a swim.
